On Sunday 25th February, three young Summit racers travelled to Hadleigh Park, the home of the London 2012 Olympic MTB XCO competition to compete in Round 1 of the Mud, Sweat and Gears (Eastern Series). It was a freezing, but sunny day, so for once, Will, Lucy and Katie were pleased that the course was hilly enough to keep warm! Will (U14 boys) was first to race, and had a tough battle with George Fowkes (West Drayton MBC/Specialized Ruislip) for the first couple of laps. As the race played out though, Will pulled away and finished a fantastic 6th, in a race time of 1:11:30 – a longer race than U14s would normally undertake. Looks as though all that cyclocross over the winter has paid off!

The format on the day meant that U12s and U9s got optional coaching during the morning, with their races at lunchtime. Sisters Lucy and Katie Allsop raced together in the U12s, on a shortened course of the main circuit. Lucy lead from the gun and held off closest rival Tulsi Bakrania (Team Darenth) for the win. Katie (actually ‘racing up’ from the U9s) was 5th out of 13 girls in the category, so put in a storming ride!

As none of our riders have ridden the Easter Series before and were gridded at the back of the field, it was an outstanding performance from everyone. Chapeau!

The next race of the season is the Gorrick Spring Series #2 on Sunday 4th March.
